De-stressing is associated with increasing better mental and physical health. The parasympathetic nervous system is activated while in the position and helps to reduce heart rate, relaxing the body.

By relieving pressure on the lower body, muscles ligaments, tendons and bones all get a well deserved rest. By minimizing the pressure on the lower body the nerves can also be calmed. This can help with any pain or soreness in the area.
