How heavy is too heavy? 🎒🥵
Studies have indicated that some students carry as much as 30% to 40% of their body weight!
Carrying heavy loads can lead to:
💥Neck, upper-back, and shoulder pain.
💥Lower back pain.
💥Pressure marks (redness and swelling) due to backpack straps.
💥Shortened length of spine, due to compensations in spinal curves.
💥‘Stooped posture’ and forward leaning.
💥Increased pressure on feet (up to 25%).
💥Decreased stride length and walking speed.
💥Impaired lung and respiratory function (increase in breathing rate).
🚨Tips for parents and students:
✅ Ensure straps are tightened so the backpack sits high on the spine.
✅ Organise heavier items low and towards the center of the backpack.
✅ Pack light when possible, removing unnecessary items.
✅ Lift properly by bending at the knees when picking up the backpack.
Please look after our students returning to school and share these tips 🦴😊
